Some bloom in the dark

While many fulfil expectation at the proper time
as all await their faces in
the garden or the lane

some are triggered by the yearly rain
on scorching sands
receiving just a single day
to blossom, breed and die

or in response to light some lie
unfurling in a shaft of faintest sun
and kissed by fishes pale and flickering as shipwrecked souls
they beautify the deeps

but sometimes, with no warning
recognising not the pull of season, water or of light
awakened from their careless trance
by insect hymns and serpent dance
or maybe moved by nothing other than a whim
some bloom in the dark
